Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty has accepted a Momentous challenge from his Oberon counterpart Kathy Sajowitz to see which council can raise the most money during Movember.

Oberon Council received a great response to its fund-raising activities for men’s health during Movember last year when men are encouraged to grow a moustache to raise money and start a conversation about men’s health.

Oberon is participating again this year and urged Cabonne to be part of the charity event.

Movember raises funds to help improve men’s health across three key areas: Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, Testicular Cancer and Prostate Cancer. Over the years they have raised millions of dollars for these causes.

Cr Beatty said Cabonne was happy to accept Oberon’s challenge and, although it may be a hard task, he expects Cabonne to win by a whisker.

“Last year Kathy’s council changed their name to ‘Moberon’ for the month, so Cabonne will change Molong to …. well that part was easy,” he said.

“But the real challenge for us is for the community to get behind councillors and council staff to sponsor them to grow a moustache this month for Movember.”

Cr Beatty said the Movember challenge wasn’t confined to men growing moustaches.

“Women and those follicly challenged can participate by Moving for Movember by walking or running 60 kilometres over the month - that’s 60km for the 60 men lost through suicide every hour around the world,” he said.

Cabonne kicked off their Movember campaign this morning on the first day of November with a fund-raising breakfast before work.
